DECLUTTER AND DEPERSONALIZE

Published December 19, 2024

This process not only makes your home look more appealing but also helps potential buyers envision themselves living in the space.

Why Decluttering and Depersonalizing Matters

When buyers walk into a home, they need to imagine their own lives unfolding there. Personal items, clutter, and distinctive décor can distract them from seeing the potential of the space.

A clean, neutral environment allows them to focus on the home’s features rather than your personal belongings. This psychological shift can make your home more appealing and can lead to quicker sales and better offers.

Start with a Plan

Before diving into the process, create a plan. Decide which rooms need the most attention and prioritize those. Typically, living rooms, kitchens, and master bedrooms are crucial as they are the main areas buyers focus on.

Remove Personal Items

Personal items include family photos, personal collections, memorabilia, and any other items that are unique to your family. These items can prevent buyers from imagining their own life in the home.

Photos and Portraits:

Store family photos and personalized artwork.

Collections and Trophies:

Pack away collections, awards, and trophies.

Personalized Décor:

Replace items like monogrammed towels or name plaques with neutral décor.

De-clutter Every Room

Go through each room and remove any items that are not necessary. This step can be time-consuming but is crucial for making your home appear spacious and organized.

Living Areas:

Remove excess furniture, magazines, books, and personal items. Aim for a minimalist look.

Kitchen:

Clear counter-tops of all but essential items. Store small appliances, clear out the fridge, and organize cabinets and pantry.

Bedrooms:

Keep bedside tables clear except for a lamp and maybe one decorative item. Store away personal items in closets.

Bathrooms:

Clear counter-tops, remove personal toiletries, and ensure the space is clean and inviting.

Organize Storage Areas

Buyers will look inside closets, cabinets, and other storage spaces to assess the home’s storage capacity. An organized storage space suggests that the home is well-maintained.

Closets:

De-clutter and organize clothes and shoes. Use matching hangers and consider adding storage solutions like bins or shelves.

Kitchen Cabinets and Pantry:

Neatly arrange dishes, pots, and pantry items. Consider using clear containers for dry goods.

Garage and Basement:

Clear out unnecessary items and organize tools, holiday decorations, and other stored goods.

Neutralize Décor

While you don’t need to completely redecorate, making some changes to neutralize the décor can make a big difference.

Paint Colors:

If you have bold or dark paint colors, consider repainting with neutral tones like beige, gray, or white.

Décor Items:

Replace unique or bold décor items with neutral pieces that appeal to a broader audience.

Artwork

Swap out personal or unique art with more generic, tasteful pieces.
